Alexander Volkanovski faced a tough challenge at UFC 294 on October 21, 2023, where he was knocked out by Islam Makhachev in the first round in a fight for the UFC lightweight title. Prior to that, at UFC 290 on July 8, 2023, he successfully defended his UFC featherweight title by stopping Yair Rodriguez with strikes in the third round.

Earlier in 2023, at UFC 284 on February 12, Volkanovski didn’t come out on top, losing by unanimous decision to Islam Makhachev over five rounds in another UFC lightweight title bout.
