Alexandre Pantoja isn’t just open to facing his teammate Kyoji Horiguchi for the UFC flyweight title—he’s hoping for it.
Last Saturday at UFC Qatar, Horiguchi made a triumphant return, submitting Tagir Ulanbekov in the third round. Post-fight, he called for a championship bout against Pantoja, who’s set to defend his title against Joshua Van at UFC 323 in Las Vegas.
“We laughed so much,” Pantoja shared with MMA Fighting. “Kyoji made it look easy against a tough opponent. He’s one of the best in the gym and pushes me to new levels.”
Training with Kyoji is intense; he gives 100% even in drills. That’s why he’s among the world’s best, not just in flyweight. At American Top Team, with over 100 fighters, Kyoji stands out as possibly the best.
Pantoja aims for his fifth title defense against the young Joshua Van, who’s risen quickly with three impressive wins this year. Pantoja also shone on that same card, defeating Kai Kara-France.
When Horiguchi announced his UFC return, Pantoja was supportive. “If it’s your dream, I’m with you,” he told Kyoji. A potential fight for the UFC belt would be a privilege, but first, Pantoja must focus on Van.
The relationship between Pantoja and Horiguchi has been mutually beneficial. A world championship fight between them would be an honor and might reveal a new side of Pantoja.
“I don’t like trash talk, but with Kyoji, it’s different,” Pantoja noted. “We have a great history, and the banter starts in the gym. He’s a unique guy with a bit of Brazilian spirit.”
Horiguchi loves Brazilian culture and cuisine, often visiting Brazilian restaurants. A title fight between them would be a gift not just for them, but for American Top Team, showcasing two fighters from the same gym competing for the UFC’s most prestigious title.
