Aljamain Sterling expressed interest in a featherweight rematch with Sean O’Malley, following O’Malley’s loss to Merab Dvalishvili, while discussing O’Malley’s potential success in the 145-pound division and reflecting on his own experiences and readiness to fight again.
Sean O’Malley recently faced a submission loss to Merab Dvalishvili. Afterward, Aljamain Sterling expressed interest in a rematch with O’Malley in the featherweight division, once O’Malley has healed and taken a break.
Sterling, who was in Dvalishvili’s corner during the UFC 316 main event, pondered O’Malley’s future. Would he stay at 135 or venture into the 145 division? Sterling himself moved up after losing to O’Malley at UFC 292 and believes O’Malley could thrive at featherweight.
“I think Sean would do really well at 145,” Sterling told MMA Fighting. His speed and length could serve him well, though the division has some tough grapplers. He mentioned fighters like Movsar Evloev and Chepe Mariscal as potential challenges.
Sterling reflected on O’Malley’s performance, noting no significant changes since their last fight. He credited Dvalishvili’s impressive skills for O’Malley’s defeat. When a fan suggested a rematch at featherweight, Sterling welcomed the idea but only when O’Malley is mentally ready.
“Let the former champ rest,” Sterling tweeted, expressing a desire to face O’Malley again when both are at their best. He acknowledged public criticism but stood by his comments, attributing backlash to O’Malley’s passionate fanbase.
Sterling is eager for another fight, having asked for matchups since January. He’s been dealing with shoulder issues and balancing his business ventures, including his brand, Funk Harbor rum.
Despite missed opportunities, Sterling remains ready. He’s been training alongside Merab, staying in shape for potential bouts. Names like Brian Ortega and Arnold Allen interest him, and he’s open to fighting Lerone Murphy, who recently ranked ahead of him.
