Ben Askren on Ventilator, Lung Transplant Possible

Retired UFC veteran Ben Askren is fighting for his life due to severe pneumonia, possibly needing a lung transplant, while his wife shares updates on his condition as he remains hospitalized and under sedation.

Retired UFC veteran Ben Askren is in a tough battle, facing the possibility of a lung transplant after severe pneumonia. The former Olympic wrestler’s situation has taken a serious turn.

His wife, Amy, recently shared an update. Ben remains hospitalized, often sedated, but he did manage to wake up recently. Doctors are diligently caring for him.

Amy expressed on Facebook, “I haven’t shared an update because Ben has been in limbo for a while.” She emphasized the importance of sharing news directly from her.

Currently, Ben is on a ventilator and ECMO, a life support system. Some days are better than others. On good days, they reduce sedation enough for him to open his eyes and squeeze hands.

The evaluation process for a lung transplant has begun. Amy is hopeful for a miracle with his current lungs but is preparing for all possibilities.

She asked for prayers, saying, “If transplant is the solution, that he can get on the list quickly and easily.” The thought of a transplant is overwhelming yet hopeful.

Despite the dire situation, Amy feels blessed by the support from their community. She urges everyone to hug their loved ones and be prepared for unexpected situations.

Ben, known for his health and vitality, never anticipated such a struggle. At 40, he last fought in the UFC in 2019 and later faced Jake Paul in a boxing match.

Now, he focuses on coaching at his wrestling academy in Wisconsin and works as an analyst and commentator for combat sports. His unexpected illness has been a shocking turn of events.
