Marcus Buchecha, a decorated jiu-jitsu champion, is set to make his UFC debut against Martin Buday, who is favored despite Buchecha’s confidence and extensive grappling accolades, as he aims to adapt and prove himself in MMA.
Martin Buday has been a force in the UFC, winning six of his seven fights since 2022. Remarkably, he’s never been submitted in 17 professional bouts. Yet, newcomer Marcus “Buchecha” is the favorite in their upcoming UFC Abu Dhabi clash.
Buchecha, however, isn’t buying into the hype. “I’m anxious to feel all that, but I’m not feeling pressured,” he told MMA Fighting. He believes the pressure lies with Buday.
“If we were to fight in the gi, I’d be the favorite,” Buchecha mused. “But in MMA, I don’t feel that. I’m new to the sport, but I’m coming hungry.”
A legend in grappling, Buchecha boasts 13 IBJJF world championships and two ADCC gold medals. Since joining MMA in 2021, he’s amassed a 5-1 record, all victories via first-round finishes.
Despite a recent layoff that had him contemplating retirement, Buchecha is eager to make up for lost time. He’s eyeing another fight in 2025, though the allure of UFC Rio de Janeiro could tempt him sooner.
“The focus is on the 26th,” he said. “I’m excited for this debut, ready to carry the jiu-jitsu flag to the octagon.”
Buday, meanwhile, has rebounded from a loss with decision wins over Andrei Arlovski and Uran Satybaldiev. The pressure, Buchecha says, is on Buday due to his experience.
Training with elite heavyweights at American Top Team, Buchecha is grateful for the opportunity. His team includes the likes of Renan Ferreira and Junior dos Santos, along with top coaches.
“Buday’s a black belt,” Buchecha acknowledged. “But I’ve faced black belts my entire life. It doesn’t change anything for me.”
Prepared for any scenario, Buchecha knows the unpredictability of MMA. “The plan doesn’t always work,” he noted. “The fighter has to adapt, has to figure it out.”
