Brandon Moreno, once contemplating retirement due to the pressures of being a UFC champion, has rejuvenated his career after a brief hiatus and now aims to reclaim the flyweight title, focusing on consistency and embracing the challenges ahead.
It’s wild to think Brandon Moreno was on the verge of quitting MMA just two years ago. Losing his UFC flyweight title and then another fight to Brandon Royval nearly pushed him into retirement.
The losses hurt, no doubt. But for Moreno, it was more than just the defeats. The pressure of being a national hero in Mexico weighed heavily on him.
“Life’s crazy sometimes,” Moreno shared with MMA Fighting. “I was this close to retiring. The stress was overwhelming, and I was exhausted mentally and physically.”
He needed a break. Just a few months to recharge, spend time with his family, and rediscover his love for the sport.
Moreno’s hiatus wasn’t long, about eight months. But it was enough for him to realize his passion for fighting.
“Training with my partners, I felt it,” Moreno said. “That’s when I knew I loved this. My fight against Amir Albazi was a masterpiece.”
Now, Moreno aims for a third flyweight title reign. He’s set to face Tatsuro Taira at UFC 323, right before Alexandre Pantoja defends his title.
Getting the belt back from Pantoja would be sweet revenge. But Moreno insists the title is his main goal, regardless of who holds it.
“I’d love to get revenge on Pantoja,” Moreno admitted. “But Van’s youth and motivation make him dangerous. Let’s see what happens.”
The pressure of being champion got to Moreno before. That’s why he’s taking a new approach this time.
He’s focused on winning against Taira, not just dreaming of the title. Consistency is key for him now.
Moreno’s been through a lot, including nearly retiring. But he’s in a better place now, with two wins under his belt.
If a title fight is next, Moreno’s excited. But is he ready to be champion again?
“Hopefully,” he laughed. “I’m staying positive. First, beat Taira, then be front row for the title fight.”
