Chael Sonnen has defended the UFC’s matchmaking decision for Paddy Pimblett versus Tony Ferguson at UFC 296, predicting that Ferguson will easily defeat the rising star and noting Ferguson’s top-ranked career history and increased activity, despite his losses.
Chael Sonnen has shown his support for the UFC’s decision to proceed with the Paddy Pimblett vs. Tony Ferguson fight at UFC 296. Speaking about the upcoming match, Sonnen places his bet on Ferguson, predicting that the veteran fighter will give the newer entrant, Pimblett, quite a challenge.
Sonnen made these comments on his YouTube channel in his distinct style, stating, “Paddy ‘The Baddy’ is going to get whipped by Tony Ferguson.” He explained his rationale, emphasizing that Ferguson has fought some of the toughest opponents throughout his career and remained in the top-10 until recently. Despite losing to Bobby Green, this marked his sixth consecutive loss; however, his standing in the top-10 illustrates the caliber of opponents he’s continually faced.
UFC 296 is set for December 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. But the match-up between Pimblett and Ferguson sets an interesting stage. Pimblett maintains an undefeated record since entering the UFC; however, the latter has seen consistent defeats or finishes in all six of his recent losses. Despite these records, Sonnen anticipates Ferguson’s experience from his tenure as UFC interim lightweight champion to play a significant role.
Additionally, Sonnen perceives Ferguson’s ongoing activity as an added advantage, considering Pimblett has been inactive since his contentious win against Jared Gordon at UFC 282 last December. Consequently, Sonnen sees Pimblett as having never posed a threat in the top-10, whereas Ferguson has just exited that prestigious bracket. He further comments on Pimblett, questioning his discipline and dedication inside the gym, hinting at potential drawbacks it may cause in the match.
