Charles Oliveira’s Unbothered Attitude Towards UFC 294 Withdrawal Silences Critics

Charles Oliveira has little concern for those who doubt him and is focused on regaining the lightweight title, despite facing criticism for withdrawing from his rematch with Islam Makhachev due to a cut, with Oliveira asserting that he and his team sought medical attention and that he doesn’t pay attention to the skeptics.

Charles Oliveira is determined to regain the lightweight title despite facing doubts from critics. After losing a vacant championship bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 280, Oliveira had his sights set on a rematch in the main event of UFC 294. However, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski replaced Oliveira, who withdrew due to a cut just 12 days before the fight.

There was speculation surrounding Oliveira’s decision to address the cut himself instead of immediately contacting the UFC. In an interview on The MMA Hour, Oliveira defended his actions, highlighting the urgency of the situation and the prompt action taken by his medical team. He explained that even three weeks later, the external stitches were still open, emphasizing the need for immediate care.

UFC welterweight contender Belal Muhammad was one of the skeptics who accused Oliveira of finding a way to avoid the fight, even suggesting that he may have intentionally cut himself. Oliveira dismissed these accusations, asserting that he has been in the UFC for 13 years and that those criticizing him are simply trying to gain attention. He emphasized that he is focused on his training and becoming a champion again, and he does not care about the opinions of others.

Although Oliveira expects a swift recovery from his cut, missing out on the Makhachev rematch means he will have to wait for another opportunity at a title shot. The UFC is likely to offer the rematch to either Oliveira or Justin Gaethje, who recently became the second “BMF” champion after defeating Dustin Poirier. Oliveira, who previously defeated Gaethje in May 2022, anticipates a chance to avenge his loss to Makhachev or compete for some kind of lightweight prize if Makhachev decides to move up to welterweight and pursue a two-division title.

Oliveira expressed his willingness to face Gaethje or any other competitor in order to achieve his goals, but he made it clear that he doesn’t feel the need to engage in messaging campaigns. He trusts that the UFC understands his dedication and believes in his abilities. Oliveira remains focused on his own journey and is eager to make his mark once again in the lightweight division.
