Colby Covington harshly criticized Jake Paul’s performance against Anthony Joshua, likening it to a “Jackass” stunt and suggesting Paul should quit boxing after suffering a knockout and a broken jaw.
Colby Covington, the former interim UFC welterweight champ, didn’t hold back his words. He tore into Jake Paul’s performance against Anthony Joshua on Netflix last Friday night.
The fight? Pretty much what folks expected. Joshua landed a vicious right hand, knocking Paul out. Ouch. Paul later revealed he suffered a broken jaw in two places, needing surgery with some teeth removed and titanium plates inserted.
Despite making it to the sixth round, Covington criticized Paul and anyone who thought he had a shot. "Well, that one wasn’t scripted, and if it was, Anthony Joshua never got the script," Covington quipped on his YouTube channel.
He compared the fight to an episode of Jackass where Johnny Knoxville boxed Butterbean. People tuned in to see if Jake was really going to get mangled by a heavyweight. Spoiler: he did, in embarrassing Jackass style.
This bout was Paul’s toughest challenge yet. Before this, he mostly faced aging MMA fighters and journeymen boxers. Joshua, with his size and power, chased Paul around before delivering the final blow in the sixth.
Even with the loss and a broken jaw, Paul insists he’ll fight again. Covington, though, thinks he should reconsider. "Jake didn’t prove he was tough or a real boxer," Covington stated. "He just proved he’s really stupid."
Covington was baffled by those betting on a "Disney Channel kid" against an Olympic gold medalist. "That whole show was an embarrassment," he added.
He wouldn’t be surprised if Jake’s done with his fighter cosplay. "Hang the gloves up, Jake," Covington advised. "Go sell deodorant to broccoli-headed teenagers. Leave the fighting to the pros."
