Conor McGregor Eyes 170-Pound Title Shot Against Islam Makhachev

Conor McGregor is eager to return to the UFC, aiming for a welterweight title shot against Islam Makhachev, while also open to other matchups, including a potential re-booking with Michael Chandler, as he anticipates fighting at a historic White House event next year.

Conor McGregor’s eyes are set on gold if he makes a return to the octagon. The former two-division champ is eager to compete at the upcoming UFC White House card in June. Though details are still up in the air, McGregor is confident he’ll be there.

He’s got big plans. Facing welterweight champ Islam Makhachev is on his radar, aiming for a belt in a third division. “I’m motivated,” McGregor told Bloody Elbow. “I want that 170-pound belt for the triple crown.”

Booking McGregor against Makhachev would be a promotional spectacle. Makhachev, ranked No. 1 in MMA Fighting’s Pound-for-Pound Rankings, awaits his next challenger. Meanwhile, McGregor, 37, hasn’t fought since 2021 and is approaching six years since his last win.

The history between McGregor and Makhachev adds spice, especially with Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Their infamous feud reached a peak at UFC 229, ending with a post-fight brawl and ensuing fines.

Recently, McGregor watched Makhachev’s impressive move to welterweight, defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322. “It would be a good fight,” McGregor said of a potential matchup. “Southpaw, southpaw. I’m excited.”

McGregor’s comeback has been linked to Michael Chandler. They were set to clash at UFC 303, but McGregor withdrew due to a toe injury. He’s open to rescheduling, trusting the UFC to choose the right opponent.

“I won’t say no to anyone,” McGregor stated. “I just want to come back and show my work.” One thing’s certain: McGregor plans to fight at the White House next year. The date’s still pending, but he’s ready for the call.

“The White House is on,” McGregor confirmed. “We’re waiting for full confirmation. I’m staying ready in the gym, two times a day.”
