Ring announcer Dan Hennessy is retiring after facing backlash for mistakenly announcing the wrong winner in the WBA bantamweight title fight between Nina Hughes and Cherneka Johnson.
Ever messed up so bad, you just gotta call it quits? That’s Dan Hennessy’s reality right now.
Last weekend, a fight between Nina Hughes and Cherneka Johnson took center stage. It was the co-main event for the Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos fight card. After 10 rounds of Cherneka dominating, Hennessy, the ring announcer, goofed up. Big time. He announced Hughes as the winner. The commentary team was speechless. Hughes was already celebrating her surprise win when Hennessy realized his blunder. He corrected himself, announcing Johnson as the rightful victor.
Props to Hennessy, though. He owned up to his mistake. Johnson accepted his apology. But, you know the internet, right? Not so forgiving. So, come Tuesday, Hennessy announced he’s retiring his mic, thanks to the backlash.
“The support’s been great. Thanks for the kind words. But the worldwide backlash? It’s too much. It’s messing with my mental health. So, I’m doing one more show. Why? Because I promised Sam Rapira. He’s a good mate, and I won’t leave him hanging. I’ll stay in touch with my friends around the world. Thanks. But I’m done being the world’s punching bag. I’m out.”
Well, at least he didn’t screw up this announcement.
