The ongoing saga between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall may soon conclude, as UFC CEO Dana White expects a decision on their potential 2025 fight within weeks, with Jones hinting at both retirement and a return, while Aspinall eagerly awaits his next challenge.
The long-running saga between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall might finally reach a conclusion soon. Fans have been buzzing about this champion vs. champion showdown for months. Yet, no real progress has been made to secure a fight date for 2025.
Jones, the UFC heavyweight champ, has been teasing both retirement and a possible return. Meanwhile, Aspinall, the interim champ, eagerly awaits his next challenge. His last bout was a knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes in July 2024.
UFC CEO Dana White expects clarity soon on whether Jones vs. Aspinall will happen. If not, he plans to push the division forward rapidly. “We’ll see how this plays out over the next couple weeks,” White told Jim Rome. “If we can’t get this fight done, we’ll move on quickly.”
Aspinall has even suggested that Jones might be retired, expressing his desire to face a new challenge as the undisputed champion. His frustration is evident as he waits for news, still hopeful for a clash with Jones.
Jones, on the other hand, mentioned that both fighters agreed to let the UFC announce any updates. Yet, he hasn’t confirmed whether a deal is close or if retirement is on the cards. One thing’s clear: Jones isn’t dodging Aspinall.
“Jon Jones has been an interesting character since day one,” White remarked. “He’s never said he’s afraid to fight anyone.” The only fight Jones ever declined was against Chael Sonnen, due to his coach’s advice, not fear.
That incident dates back to 2012, when Jones was set to defend his light heavyweight title against Dan Henderson. After Henderson’s injury, the UFC wanted Sonnen as a replacement, but the fight was scrapped.
Whether Jones will pass on fighting Aspinall remains uncertain. However, White is optimistic about getting answers soon, potentially setting up the biggest heavyweight clash in UFC history.
