Demetrious Johnson Criticizes UFC After Lerone Murphy Title Fight Snub

Demetrious Johnson criticized the UFC’s decision to grant Diego Lopes a featherweight title rematch over undefeated contender Lerone Murphy, questioning the transparency and legitimacy of the sport’s matchmaking process.

Demetrious Johnson is baffled by the UFC’s choices regarding the featherweight title. At UFC on Feb. 1, Alexander Volkanovski defends his belt against Diego Lopes. This rematch has stirred controversy, as Lopes only fought once since their last encounter.

On his show, MightyCast, Johnson questioned why Lopes got the nod over Lerone Murphy. "It’s not me talking shit," he clarified, "just questioning the matchmakers’ thought process."

Johnson wonders about the sport’s legitimacy. Typically, a fighter on a win streak should be the top contender. Was Jean Silva even a contender when he fought Lopes? If Silva had won, would he get a title shot?

In today’s MMA, title shots seem awarded after just one win. Johnson asks fans to ponder this: Lopes lost to Volkanovski, then beat Silva in a tough fight. Yet, he gets another title shot.

Lopes, who debuted in May 2023, gained fame quickly. He lost to Movsar Evloev but won five straight to earn his first title shot. Despite falling short against Volkanovski, he’s known for thrilling bouts and has a strong following in Mexico.

Johnson gets why Lopes is favored but wants transparency from the UFC. "Is it popularity?" he asks. "Are we doing this because someone’s better or because they sell tickets?"

He feels the sport’s legitimacy is at stake. "It’s pick and choose," he claims, suggesting market interests influence decisions. Fans deserve clarity on these choices.

Murphy’s exclusion is puzzling, given his stellar performance. In August, he knocked out Aaron Pico, extending his streak to 17-0-1. Why was Murphy overlooked? Was his streak ignored?

Johnson feels fans don’t grasp the UFC’s reasoning. "Should we understand their decisions?" he wonders, speaking to Murphy. "Does your win streak mean anything?"
