Devin Haney’s Warning to Sean O’Malley: Don’t Pursue Boxing; It Won’t Be Competitive

Devin Haney, the undisputed lightweight boxing champion, distinguishes between boxing and MMA, stating that while he respects MMA fighters in their own sport, they cannot compete with him in the boxing ring. Haney also dismisses the chances of UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou defeating lineal heavyweight champ Tyson Fury in their upcoming boxing match.

As boxing’s reigning lightweight champion, Devin Haney understands the attention and lucrative opportunities that come with the recent trend of crossover boxing matches. However, he can’t help but find it amusing when MMA fighters confidently claim they could defeat boxing’s top talent in their own sport. Haney acknowledges that both disciplines are distinct and emphasizes that he wouldn’t stand a chance in the cage against MMA fighters. Nevertheless, when it comes to the boxing ring, he firmly believes that they can’t compete with him due to the different fighting styles involved.

In the upcoming crossover boxing bout between former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou and lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, Haney doesn’t give Ngannou much of a chance to emerge victorious. While acknowledging that any fighter has a “puncher’s chance,” he believes it’s highly unlikely for Ngannou to pull off an upset against Fury. Haney himself is preparing for a title fight against Regis Prograis on December 9, and he had his own encounter with the ongoing MMA versus boxing debate. When UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley remarked that nothing could break Haney, the boxing champ promptly responded, asserting that MMA fighters hadn’t learned their lesson yet.

Haney maintains his stance, cautioning O’Malley that stepping into the boxing ring with him would not be a competitive endeavor. He does, however, express respect for O’Malley’s skills in the cage and acknowledges him as a formidable fighter. When asked about MMA fighters who have impressed him with their boxing abilities, Haney mentions Israel Adesanya, Conor McGregor, and Sean Strickland. Haney is particularly impressed by Strickland’s recent shoulder roll technique, which he had not seen utilized in MMA before.

In conclusion, Haney believes that while crossover fights generate interest and revenue, boxing and MMA are fundamentally different and excel in their respective domains. He views himself as unbeatable in the boxing ring against MMA fighters and dismisses their chances of success. Nonetheless, he holds respect for their skills within the cage, highlighting fighters like O’Malley and Strickland who have showcased impressive boxing proficiency in MMA.
