Dustin Poirier may soon end his retirement from MMA, while Justin Gaethje, after defeating Paddy Pimblet at UFC 324, is set to unify his interim lightweight title with Ilia Topuria and possibly face Poirier in a trilogy bout.
MMA retirements are like boomerangs; they always seem to come back. Dustin Poirier might just be the next to end his.
Saturday night was electrifying. Justin Gaethje dominated Paddy Pimblet at UFC 324, snagging the interim lightweight title. Now, fans are buzzing about a potential unification fight with Ilia Topuria later this year.
But there’s more on the horizon. Could we see a trilogy bout with his arch-nemesis? Poirier and Gaethje have a storied history. Their first clash ended with Poirier’s TKO victory in 2018. Fast forward to 2023, Gaethje knocked out Poirier, claiming the “BMF” title.
Poirier fought three more times after that knockout, but eventually hung up his gloves in July. His retirement came after losing a trilogy bout to Max Holloway at UFC 318. Yet, in MMA, saying goodbye often means “see you later.”
