Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn was surprised by the result of the Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou fight, stating that Ngannou, a complete novice in boxing, actually beat Fury and deserves a rematch, while also suggesting that his fighter Anthony Joshua would be interested in facing either Fury or Ngannou.
Eddie Hearn, the Matchroom Boxing promoter, shared his thoughts on the recent boxing matchup between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou. Despite not being present in Saudi Arabia for the fight, Hearn expressed his surprise at what he witnessed. He acknowledged that both fighters appeared inexperienced in the ring and emphasized that Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, seemed like a complete novice. Hearn couldn’t fathom the fact that Fury, widely regarded as the lineal heavyweight champion, was defeated. Though there wasn’t much action in the later rounds, Ngannou managed to drop Fury, leaving a significant impact on the bout.
Despite Fury being the heavy favorite with -1400 odds, the fight did not unfold as expected. The current PFL heavyweight, Ngannou, proved to be a worthy opponent as he fought competitively against the lineal boxing champion throughout the match. Hearn rewatched the fight and commended Ngannou for his performance, despite his lack of experience in boxing. Hearn acknowledged that Ngannou would likely be defeated by opponents of lower caliber, but praised his efforts in the ring.
Following his victory, Fury is now expected to face Oleksandr Usyk, the Ukrainian heavyweight who holds other major world titles, in an undisputed championship fight. Both fighters had a face-off after the main event, suggesting that a significant match is on the horizon. While Hearn believes Ngannou deserves a rematch against Fury, he also expressed Anthony Joshua’s interest in facing Fury or even Ngannou himself. Hearn stated that if Fury has to fight Usyk, Joshua would be open to dealing with Ngannou in the aftermath of the surprising 10-round contest.
Hearn expressed his frustration with the state of boxing, deeming it a mess after the Fury-Ngannou fight. He questioned the initial expectations of the bout and highlighted the unpredictability of the sport. Hearn concluded by stating that regardless of the outcome, whether it be fighting Fury, Usyk, or Ngannou, Joshua is ready to take on any challenge.
