Former UFC fighter and professional wrestler Matt Riddle announced his departure from WWE after five years, amid numerous layoffs following WWE’s merger with UFC to become TKO Group Holdings.
Matt Riddle, the Ex-UFC fighter who had transformed into a professional wrestler, has been let go from the WWE after spending five years with the promotion. He disclosed this development through his social media after his departure was confirmed by the company. In a heartfelt message to his fans, he wrote, “Just wanted to inform everyone that I’m no longer with WWE. Thank you for the memories and opportunities also thank you to all the fans for the support and love you give me every time I go out to the ring. See you all soon.”
Riddle’s departure coincided with a trend of an increasing number of athletes being let go from the WWE roster. The wave of releases was triggered by a merger of WWE and UFC, forming TKO Group Holdings. Despite the intentions not being entirely clear, the merger was anticipated to lead to several layoffs. It was, however, unclear how the talent within the promotion would be affected. In addition to the merge, WWE recently signed a promising new broadcast rights deal that would move its weekly Smackdown show from FOX to USA Network for five years, valued over $1.4 billion.
Riddle’s wrestling career had experienced its turbulent moments during his stint with WWE. Although popular among fans, he faced several challenges outside the ring, including reportedly failing drug tests under WWE’s wellness program. His second offense resulted in a 60-day suspension that lasted into 2023. Interestingly, Riddle’s journey into professional wrestling began after he was released from the UFC due to a couple of failed drug tests for marijuana in the same year. Despite the setbacks, Riddle was a multi-time champion for WWE and competed in both singles and tag team matches during his career. He first achieved prominence in WWE while performing in NXT, WWE’s feeder and developmental league.
Following his release, the 37-year-old veteran did not give any hint about his future plans. His departure indicates the end of an era of his career with WWE as he ventures into other opportunities.
