Georges St-Pierre finds it difficult to predict the outcome of a potential fight between Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones, acknowledging Jones’ legendary status despite his age and inactivity, while considering Aspinall’s current momentum and potential.
Georges St-Pierre finds himself as puzzled as the rest of us when it comes to predicting Tom Aspinall’s chances against Jon Jones.
For the past couple of years, the UFC heavyweight champ has been eyeing a unification bout with Jones. Jones snagged a vacant title at UFC 285, while Aspinall grabbed an interim title at UFC 295. Yet, the fight never happened.
Why? A mix of reasons. Jones got injured in 2024 and was supposed to face Stipe Miocic, but that got delayed. Plus, Jones wasn’t exactly eager to give Aspinall a title shot.
Aspinall seemed to move on when Jones retired in June. But then, he expressed interest in a UFC White House event set for June 2026. Meanwhile, Jones has been eyeing Alex Pereira, keeping the Aspinall fight buzz alive.
If it ever goes down, St-Pierre seems to lean towards his old training buddy. “It’s a hard fight to call,” he said during a Kick broadcast with Adin Ross.
Jones has achieved more than anyone, according to St-Pierre. But today? Aspinall’s younger, riding some momentum—though it hit a snag with an eye gouge. It was a close fight, and a rematch seems likely.
And if Jones and Aspinall clash? St-Pierre’s uncertain. “Jones is an anomaly,” he admitted. “You cannot bet against Jon Jones. Even if he’s older and not in his prime, he’s still Jon Jones.”
Jones, at 38, hasn’t fought much since 2020. Yet, his reign in the light heavyweight division keeps him in the pound-for-pound conversation. Currently, Islam Makhachev seems to top that list, but others like Ilia Topuria and Alex Pereira are contenders too.
St-Pierre, a two-division UFC champ himself, believes Jones remains a key player as long as he’s active. “Islam Makhachev is there, for sure,” St-Pierre noted. “Topuria, Merab, Arman Tsarukyan—they’re all in the mix.”
Rumors swirl about Jones fighting Pereira at the White House. “That would be interesting,” St-Pierre mused. “Pereira’s one of the top right now. On paper, it’d be a great fight.”
