Ian Machado Garry Claims Carlos Prates Quit; Prates Calls Him ‘A**hole’

Ian Machado Garry is confident he will stop Carlos Prates’ hype at UFC Kansas City, despite Prates’ impressive winning streak, and has criticized Prates for a past loss, while Prates responded by dismissing Garry’s comments as mere internet talk.

Ian Machado Garry is brimming with confidence. He’s eager to halt the Fight Nerds hype at UFC Kansas City.

“The Future” steps into the spotlight on April 26. He faces off against Carlos Prates, a rising star in the welterweight division. Prates has made quite an entrance into the UFC, winning his first four fights via knockout. Each victory earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. Impressive, right? Overall, Prates boasts an 11-fight winning streak as he gears up to face No. 6-ranked Garry.

But Garry? Not impressed. In a recently uploaded clip, he critiques one of Prates’ past losses, labeling him a “quitter.”

“This is a video of Carlos Prates and his true fighting spirit,” Garry remarks. “It’s called being a quitter.”

Garry elaborates further. “He had just been beaten up all the rounds prior,” he explains. “Puts his hand up, shakes his head, says, ‘I’m done,’ and then just drops to the ground in absolute despair because he knows that deep down he’s not a fighter.”

The bout Garry refers to took place in January 2017. Prates faced Mikhail Romanchuk in China. Curious? You can watch that fight below.

Interestingly, Garry’s mention of “rounds prior” isn’t entirely accurate. The fight concluded just over two minutes into Round 1. However, it was indeed a rough outing for Prates. Romanchuk unleashed relentless haymakers, keeping Prates on the defensive throughout. A barrage of heavy punches against the fence led to the TKO finish.

Despite that setback, Prates bounced back remarkably. He won 14 of his next 15 bouts, with only one needing the judges’ scorecards. Notably, five of Prates’ six career losses occurred by knockout or submission in the first round. His recent victories over veterans Neil Magny and Li Jingliang have set the stage for his first crack at breaking into the top 10 of the fiercely competitive welterweight division.

On the flip side, Garry (15-1) is coming off his first professional loss. He took on unbeaten contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 last December on short notice and lost by unanimous decision after a closely contested three-round battle. Before that encounter, Garry had secured victories in his first eight UFC fights.

In an update, Prates recently fired back on Instagram.

“We’re here training while Ian Garry is talking sh*t on the internet,” Prates retorted. “You have a lot of free time… On the 26th, I’ll punch him in the mouth… Asshole.”
