The UFC created an interim lightweight title for Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett to fight over at UFC 324 due to the reigning champion stepping back for personal reasons, with Ilia Topuria expressing no issue with the decision and emphasizing his focus on personal matters.
In November, the lightweight champ announced a break from competition to handle personal issues. This led the UFC to set up an interim title match between Gaethje and Pimblett for UFC 324 on Jan. 24. Some fans were skeptical about the interim belt and wondered why No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan was left out. But Topuria told ESPN Deportes he’s okay with the UFC moving forward without him.
“Very good, very happy,” Topuria said, explaining he’d already discussed things with the UFC. He couldn’t compete in January due to personal matters, so the interim fight between Pimblett and Gaethje was arranged.
Topuria believes the title is well-deserved for both fighters. It’s their closest shot at a world championship. “Congratulations to both,” he added, “but they’ll eventually face the real deal.”
Gaethje, who previously won an interim title by knocking out Tony Ferguson in May 2020, failed to unify it against Khabib Nurmagomedov later that year. Since then, he’s gone 4-2, including a recent win over Rafael Fiziev.
Pimblett boasts nine straight wins, with a perfect 7-0 in the UFC. Despite some close calls, like against Jared Gordon, his popularity and credentials continue to rise.
The UFC 324 winner is expected to face Topuria next. However, “El Matador” thinks Pimblett might have a better shot at capitalizing on the opportunity.
“If Justin wins, the UFC has plans I can’t discuss,” Topuria said. “But I’d be thrilled to fight Justin, even at the White House! It’s tough to ruin the UFC and Pimblett’s plans, but not impossible.”
He added, “I don’t know if beating Pimblett is lucky because then you’d face me. Not sure that’s lucky!”
Topuria and Pimblett have a longstanding feud, with confrontations inside and outside the octagon. While eager to settle this beef, Topuria believes Pimblett faces a tough challenge against Gaethje.
“It’s hard to predict such fights,” Topuria admitted. “Paddy lacks skills to easily take someone down. Justin’s known for his heavy hands and kicks. Paddy’s taken many hits before, so it’s an exciting fight for fans.”
Topuria expects to be out for at least the first quarter of the year. His priority now is sorting out family issues while Gaethje and Pimblett battle it out.
“I’ve communicated my personal problems,” Topuria said. “No exact date for my return, but once resolved, I’ll be back in the octagon. My family’s welfare comes first, but I’ll return to give the show everyone deserves.”
