Jorge Masvidal defended Kamaru Usman against Ian Machado Garry’s criticism, arguing that Garry, despite his recent wins, lacks the credentials and excitement to disparage Usman or claim a title shot.
Jorge Masvidal, despite losing twice to Kamaru Usman, still defends the former UFC welterweight champ. He recently took issue with comments made by Ian Machado Garry.
Garry labeled Usman a “has-been,” arguing he didn’t deserve a shot at 170-pound champ Islam Makhachev. Garry believes fighters like Michael Morales and Shavkat Rakhmonov are more deserving.
The UFC hasn’t announced Makhachev’s next opponent for 2026, but Masvidal was clearly irked. “I never thought I’d advocate for Usman, but here I am,” he said on Death Row MMA.
Masvidal criticized Garry, saying, “Calling Usman a has-been is crazy because you’ve never even been, brother. You’re nothing.” He pointed out Garry’s controversial win over Belal Muhammad.
Despite Garry’s youth, Masvidal thinks Usman would still dominate him. “Ian Garry’s not the best welterweight, but he was born with some gifts,” Masvidal noted, mentioning Garry’s size advantage.
Garry has a strong UFC record, winning 10 of 11 bouts, with his only loss to Rakhmonov. He recently secured victories over Prates and ex-champ Muhammad.
Masvidal continued his critique: “For Garry to say Usman is irrelevant, man, what have you done?” He described Garry’s style as boring, lacking excitement and aggression.
Masvidal feels Garry needs to diss others to stay relevant. “Ian is just boring as f*ck,” he said, criticizing Garry’s lack of killer instinct in fights.
