Alexander Volkanovski faces a challenging lineup of potential contenders for his featherweight title, with Jorge Masvidal expressing doubts about Volkanovski’s ability to defeat rising stars like Movsar Evloev and Lerone Murphy, while acknowledging that overcoming these opponents could cement Volkanovski’s legacy as the greatest featherweight.
Alexander Volkanovski’s second reign as featherweight champ is packed with challengers, and Jorge Masvidal isn’t sure he can fend them all off. In the main event of UFC 325 on January 31, Volkanovski defends his title against Diego Lopes. They’ve faced off before, with Volkanovski winning decisively, but Lopes had his moments.
Even if Volkanovski wins again, a lineup of contenders is ready to pounce. Masvidal discussed the threats posed by Movsar Evloev and Lerone Murphy, both undefeated in the UFC. He believes these fighters could define Volkanovski’s legacy.
"Eventually, I see Movsar and Murphy fighting for the title," Masvidal said on his Death Row MMA podcast. "I don’t know when, but it’s gonna happen." He doubts Volkanovski can beat either of them. Movsar’s wrestling might be too much, despite Volkanovski’s past success against Islam Makhachev.
Evloev’s title charge has been stalled by injuries and a lack of standout moments. All nine of his UFC wins are by decision. Meanwhile, Murphy made waves with a Knockout of the Year candidate against Aaron Pico, yet was passed over for a title shot.
This might’ve been a lucky break for Volkanovski. "I see Murphy getting him," Masvidal said. "Volk can’t control this guy. I’d be surprised if he could take him down and hold him."
Murphy’s striking is explosive yet basic, avoiding unnecessary risks. Masvidal favors Murphy against Volkanovski, too. However, he also sees the upside for Volkanovski facing these challengers.
If Volkanovski can defend his title against Lopes, Evloev, and Murphy, Masvidal would consider him the greatest at 145 pounds—maybe of all time. "If Volk pulls this off, greatest f*cking featherweight ever," Masvidal said. "That’s interdimensional stuff. Another level of greatness."
