Jorge Masvidal pled guilty to misdemeanor battery and received a sentence of time served with no jail time after the assault case involving Colby Covington came to a close.
Jorge Masvidal has found closure in his assault case against Colby Covington, his former friend and opponent. Masvidal recently entered a guilty plea for misdemeanor battery as part of a plea deal, resulting in two felony charges being dropped. The incident occurred in March 2022 outside a restaurant in Miami, where Masvidal attacked Covington. As part of the plea deal, Masvidal has been sentenced to time served and will be responsible for court fees, but he will not serve any jail time.
Despite losing to Covington in their previous fight at UFC 272, the rivalry between Masvidal and Covington remained. A few weeks later, Masvidal confronted Covington outside a Miami steakhouse, resulting in injuries for the former interim welterweight champion, including a broken tooth and concussion. Covington positively identified Masvidal as his attacker, stating that he was assaulted with two punches.
At the time of the incident, Masvidal maintained his innocence. However, he was later arrested and faced multiple felony charges, including aggravated battery and criminal mischief. If convicted of all charges, Masvidal could have faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Fortunately for Masvidal, he was able to reach an agreement with prosecutors and plead guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge. This plea deal brings an end to the long-running saga involving Covington. It is a resolution that allows both parties to move forward and put this episode behind them.
