Justin Gaethje Excited for Potential Ilia Topuria Fight

Justin Gaethje is set to fight Paddy Pimblett for an interim lightweight title at UFC 324, with hopes of eventually facing Ilia Topuria, the undisputed champion, despite the match receiving some criticism.

Justin Gaethje’s got his eyes on Ilia Topuria, but not for the reasons you’d think. First, though, he’s got a date with Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324 on Jan. 24, fighting for the interim lightweight title. The winner? Likely facing Topuria, who’s taking a break but plans to return after Q1 2026.

Gaethje knows he has to beat Pimblett first. But if he does, he’s pumped about the mental game Topuria brings. “Ilia, I trust my A to B,” Gaethje told ESPN Deportes. “It’s all about intuition, judging distance, and timing. This sport’s wild—anything can happen. It’s about not making mistakes against a guy like that.”

Avoiding Topuria’s right hand is key. His left hook and 2-3 combo? Top-notch. Gaethje loves the challenge—and the fear. Despite the buzz around Gaethje and Pimblett, some folks aren’t thrilled about the interim title fight. Gaethje’s 4-3 in his last seven, while Pimblett’s No. 5 with a 7-0 UFC record.

Regardless, these fights always generate hype. Gaethje hopes fans get that it’s just business. “You can’t please everyone,” he said. “Interim titles mean I get paid championship money. That’s crucial for me.”

Gaethje prides himself on being consistent and exciting. His last fight? First time he earned less than before. He aims to change that with big fights. Even if he wins, he’s not banking on a clear path to Topuria. The UFC’s plans can be unpredictable, especially with Topuria’s return uncertain.

Gaethje won’t just roll over for Pimblett. He’s ready to disrupt any plans for a Pimblett-Topuria showdown. “Many things could happen,” Gaethje said. “Interim champs can become full champs overnight. But I can’t control that.”

His focus? Winning and shaking things up. Fans might want Pimblett vs. Topuria, but Gaethje’s ready to spoil the party. “That’s my job,” he said.
