Kayla Harrison’s coach, Mike Brown, defends her against steroid accusations from rival Julianna Peña, emphasizing Harrison’s natural athleticism and consistent physique, despite Peña’s claims based on her appearance.
Kayla Harrison is a force to be reckoned with in the MMA world. Her physical prowess rivals any fighter in the UFC, which might not sit well with Julianna Peña. But let’s be clear: her success isn’t due to cheating.
Harrison’s coach, Mike Brown from American Top Team, quickly defended her. Peña accused Harrison of using steroids to climb the rankings, even suggesting she should “cycle off” before their upcoming bout.
Despite never failing a drug test, Harrison faces these accusations. Brown dismisses them, emphasizing that exceptional athletes exist. “Some people aren’t normal,” he says. “Freaks rise to the top.”
Peña claimed Harrison’s physique changed dramatically since her Olympic days. She said Harrison looked “very feminine” back then, but now she’s “super juicy and cut up.”
However, Harrison’s Olympic achievements came at a higher weight class. She competed at 78 kilograms, nearly 172 pounds, with same-day weigh-ins—unlike MMA. Transitioning to MMA, she dropped to 155 pounds, then to 135 in the UFC.
Brown argues that Harrison’s physique changes are natural. He believes a clean athlete maintains a stable body over time. “Kayla is always the same,” he insists.
He’s confident in her integrity. “She’s a freak among freaks,” Brown says. “A special athlete.” Her dedication is evident daily, with no shortcuts taken.
Peña might struggle to accept this, but Brown knows Harrison’s build is unique. It’s tough for some to grasp that her physique is all-natural.
“There are athletes out there who defy the norm,” Brown adds. Just like in basketball, where some players are extraordinarily tall or muscular, Harrison’s abilities are exceptional. Just because one person can’t achieve it doesn’t mean another can’t.
