Dustin Poirier is retiring after UFC 318, leaving behind a storied career with numerous accolades, including an interim lightweight championship and multiple Fight of the Night bonuses, though he never captured the undisputed title, which some argue keeps him from being considered among the greatest fighters.
Dustin Poirier is gearing up for his final fight at UFC 318, facing Max Holloway in the main event. As he prepares to retire, Poirier leaves behind a legacy packed with accolades, including 10 Fight of the Night bonuses. He’s tied with Drew Dober for the most knockouts in UFC lightweight history. An interim lightweight champion, Poirier never captured the undisputed belt, falling short against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev.
Despite these title fight losses, Poirier’s achievements remain impressive. UFC veteran Matt Brown argues that the lack of an undisputed title keeps Poirier from being considered one of the all-time greats. “Unfortunately, he didn’t win an [undisputed] title,” Brown said on The Fighter vs. The Writer. “When you don’t win a title, you just can’t be in a greatest of all-time conversation.”
Poirier’s heart, determination, and toughness have been his trademarks, keeping him among the best lightweights for nearly a decade. His impressive run at featherweight adds to his list of accomplishments. Brown believes these qualities set Poirier apart from many of his contemporaries.
“He’s a warrior,” Brown said. “I don’t remember him really having many fights he just dominated. It was always a knockdown, drag-out war.” While he may not rank in the top five for skill or athleticism, Poirier is among the top three in terms of grit and determination.
Brown also places Poirier at the top of the list of fighters who never won an undisputed championship. It’s a list filled with legends, and Poirier stands out. “I’d also put him at the top of the list of just greatest warriors in the UFC,” Brown added.
More than anything, Brown hopes Poirier knows he gave everything to the sport and will be remembered as a fan favorite. “I think Dustin really maximized everything he has,” Brown said. “I hope he has an amazing life after. Maybe he gets some books, speaking tours, makes a lot of money and lives a great life.”
