Maycee Barber, after overcoming significant health setbacks that derailed her UFC career, is eager to make a strong comeback at UFC 323, aiming to reestablish herself in the flyweight division and pursue a title shot.
Maycee Barber was riding high with six straight UFC wins, just a step away from a flyweight title shot. But then, disaster hit.
She fell ill, missing a fight with Rose Namajunas and landing in the hospital. Doctors scrambled to diagnose her, and she endured over a dozen rounds of antibiotics. Recovery was slow, with advice to take a year off.
When she was set to return against Erin Blanchfield, another medical emergency struck. More tests followed, but eventually, she was cleared to fight again. Now, she’s ready to face Karine Silva at UFC 323.
“This matchup is perfect for me to show my momentum,” Barber said. “Despite the 18-month layoff, it’s my time to shine.”
Barber is eager to secure a dominant win and cement her spot for a title run. Though sidelined by illness, her ambition remains undeterred.
She’s confident that a win at UFC 323 will position her well in the division. While health questions linger, Barber insists she’s ready to compete.
“I’ve proven myself throughout my career,” Barber stated. “I didn’t choose these setbacks, but I’m not backing down. I’m going for that belt.”
Barber joined the UFC young, aiming to be the youngest champion. That didn’t happen, but her early start means more time to achieve her goals.
At 27, she’s entering her prime, reflecting on the missed time with a new perspective. “I’ve grown up in the UFC,” Barber explained. “I’m still young, but I’ve got to hurry.”
Her fight with Silva marks the beginning of her climb back up. The flyweight division offers hope for a title shot, despite her absence.
Valentina Shevchenko has cleared many contenders, with Natalia Silva and Erin Blanchfield as top challengers. Barber aims to join that conversation with a statement performance.
“Anything can happen,” Barber said. “I’m on a win streak and ready for whatever comes next. One more fight, and I’m there.”
As she prepares for Saturday’s fight, anticipation builds. “I can’t wait to feel that thrill again,” Barber shared.
“The APEX was cool, but I’m excited for T-Mobile Arena. I can already feel the energy. It’s going to be amazing.”
