Miles Johns’ Controversy with James Krause: A Blessing in Disguise After Initial Struggle

UFC fighter Miles Johns left Glory MMA following coach James Krause‘s betting scandal and suspension, and now trains at Marathon MMA under fellow fighter Trey Ogden, feeling his needs are better met there.

When Miles Johns relocated to Kansas City to train under James Krause at Glory MMA, he sincerely believed it to be the exact opportunity he needed to soar to new levels in the UFC. However, his journey took an unexpected turn after a single fight and he found himself compelled to explore other options. An unfortunate scandal, involving Krause’s involvement in a betting ring, had results that were far reaching and led to an indefinite suspension put into place by the Nevada Athletic Commission. This left Johns in a precarious position, as Krause was effectively banned from UFC, and fighters were told that associating with him or training at his gym could have serious repercussions.

As the scandal unfolded, Krause found himself removed from Johns’ corner just days before Johns competed at UFC Vegas 65. Despite the adversarial circumstances, Johns managed to clinch the win. However, Glory MMA was shut down soon after due to the ongoing investigation procured against Krause. Johns revealed in an interview that he held no ill feelings toward Krause, although he expressed dissatisfaction with the way Krause had handled the situation. He felt a lack of guidance and leadership, yet he also acknowledged that Krause was grappling with serious issues of his own.

Johns, who had a fourth child underway and had just relocated to Kansas City, found himself questioning his life decisions and career path. However, driven by his strong faith, he was reassured that his relocation was for the right reasons and for his own peace of mind. He was also seeking a fresh start from his former gym where he had struggled mentally. Firmly believing that the move to Kansas City was the right choice for himself and his family, Johns decided to take his time and let things pan out before making any rash decisions.

Seeing an opportunity, Johns directed his attention and energies toward Trey Ogden, a fellow UFC fighter who was running Marathon MMA. Having been coached by Krause before founding his own facility, Ogden seemed like a good fit for Johns. Johns stated that although he had gained much from his stint at Glory, his game improved more working with Ogden, as he received more one-on-one attention. Johns found the transition tough but eventually, he felt home at Marathon. Now, with his unwavering focus on the future and his training at Marathon MMA, Johns aims to prove his mettle and the soundness of his decision, when he steps back into the octagon this Saturday at UFC Vegas 79, to compete against Dan Argueta.
