MMA Fighter Skips Event After Payment: “This is Unfair”

Wilian Poles was set to fight Daniel Alves at BSB Fight in Brasilia, but Alves never showed up, leaving Poles frustrated after a significant weight cut and travel, while Alves’ coach confirmed he disappeared without explanation.

Wilian Poles stepped into the cage Saturday night, ready to face Daniel Alves. But Alves? Nowhere to be seen.

The lightweight bout at BSB Fight in Brasilia was set. Poles went through the usual pre-fight routine, Vaseline and all. Yet, moments later, Roger Vieira, the promoter—and Alves’ coach—announced Alves had vanished.

“I’m really upset,” Vieira shared. “Wilian ‘Samurai’ traveled from the South to fight. But Alves? He disappeared. No calls, no texts. Paid and gone.”

Poles, understandably frustrated, voiced his anger. “Crossed five states to beat this guy. Where is he? This is bullshit. I cut 26 pounds in two weeks, 11 on the last day!”

Vieira later told MMA Fighting that Alves last checked in five hours before the event. Apparently, he went to his mom’s and now feels “embarrassed.”

Alves, with an 8-3 record and one no-contest, has a history. “Not the first time,” Vieira noted. “Once, he felt unwell during fight week. Another time, after weigh-ins. Now, no explanations.”

Attempts to reach Alves for comment went unanswered. Poles received his show and win money, while Alves got half his show money upfront—about $90 USD. He would’ve earned more post-fight.

In an odd twist, the referee raised Poles’ hand, suggesting they’d try to credit him with a “knockout or submission” for the walkover. Vieira hopes for it, though it’s unlikely.
