Oscar De La Hoya, former promoter of Canelo Alvarez, plans to sue Alvarez for defamation following allegations that De La Hoya “steals” from his fighters.
Oscar De La Hoya’s got a message for Canelo Alvarez. Post-Saturday, their next showdown’s gonna be in court. Yeah, you heard it right.
De La Hoya, the big boss of Golden Boy Promotions, dropped this bombshell recently. Oh, and he used to be Alvarez’s promoter. He’s got a bone to pick with Alvarez after a heated press conference. The stage? Alvarez’s forthcoming fight with Jaime Munguia in Sin City.
Alvarez didn’t hold back. He accused De La Hoya of ripping off his fighters, not once but multiple times. De La Hoya’s response? He’s gonna clear his name in court.
“I’m definitely going to sue for defamation,” De La Hoya told ESPN. Straight up.
Think about the damage accusations like these could do. To his rep, his business. What if fighters start believing that? Nightmare scenario for De La Hoya.
During the press conference, Alvarez claimed De La Hoya had stolen from him. He even questioned if Gennaidy Golovkin got paid for their rematch. De La Hoya’s response to ESPN? Golovkin got “everything he’s owed.”
De La Hoya’s not one to take things lying down. “I’m going to defend myself when somebody’s speaking negative about me,” he said. He saw the exchange with Alvarez as his moment. His chance to let Alvarez know how he felt. “It felt so good,” he said. “Finally — I was just holding my tongue for all these years — and finally I can f*cking tell him in his face, put some f*cking respect on my name.”
As for the Alvarez vs. Munguia fight? MMA Fighting’s got you covered. Tune in Saturday night for all the action.
