Paddy Pimblett criticized Charles Oliveira‘s strategy against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317, expressing surprise at Oliveira’s decision to engage in a direct exchange, and anticipates using a different approach if he faces Topuria, leveraging his size advantage.
Paddy Pimblett remains a fan of Charles Oliveira, yet he was taken aback by the former lightweight champ’s approach against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317. The fight concluded when Oliveira stepped into the pocket, only to meet Topuria’s devastating right hook, followed by a left that sealed the deal. While Topuria’s power was no secret, Pimblett couldn’t fathom Oliveira’s strategy.
"I thought if Charles dragged him to the later rounds, it might’ve been different," Pimblett shared on the Verse Us podcast. "I really like Charles, but what the f*ck was that game plan, lad? Just stand there and get punched."
He continued, "I’d love to know their game plan. It was half embarrassing. Topuria ended up on top, and I saw Oliveira’s cut. What are you doing swinging punches with a top-class boxer? It blew my mind."
Early in the first round, Oliveira managed to take Topuria down, but the success was fleeting. The former featherweight champ scrambled back to his feet quickly. Pimblett was perplexed by Oliveira’s choice not to use his advantages against the smaller fighter.
"The first 20 seconds, he kicked a bit," Pimblett noted. "I thought it might be a tough night for Topuria. Then Charles just started swinging. When Ilia walked out smiling, I knew it’d play a part."
Pimblett acknowledges that Oliveira’s long career and many battles could have influenced the outcome. Yet, he promises a different approach if he faces Topuria next.
"Oliveira’s got loads of damage," Pimblett said. "I’ve never had a fight like that. He wouldn’t knock me out. His best punch? I’d laugh."
Right after UFC 317, Pimblett faced off with Topuria, hinting at a future clash. He’s currently weighing around 195 pounds, knowing his size will be an advantage over Topuria.
"I’ve said it before, people think he’d steamroll me, but size matters," Pimblett asserted. "People doubt me, but lad, he’s a midget."
He added, "I told him, I will finish you, little boy. I’m much wider. That’s why people cut weight."
