Dustin Poirier announced his retirement after losing to Max Holloway at UFC 318, while Petr Yan, reflecting on Poirier’s career, prepares for his upcoming fight against Marcus McGhee at UFC Abu Dhabi, aiming to regain momentum and challenge for the bantamweight title again.
Petr Yan has earned a reputation as a must-watch fighter among UFC fans. However, this past Saturday at UFC 318, the sport bid farewell to another beloved athlete.
After the main event in New Orleans, where Max Holloway retained the “BMF” title by defeating Dustin Poirier, Poirier laid down his gloves. He announced his retirement right there in the octagon.
Yan is gearing up for his return at UFC Abu Dhabi, facing the rising bantamweight Marcus McGhee. Before the fight, Yan shared his thoughts on Poirier’s career and final bout.
“I think it was a great and exciting fight,” Yan told MMA Fighting. “Dustin had an amazing career, full of big and thrilling fights. He’s been in many wars and probably wanted to go out with a win.”
“But it’s just a sport, you know?” Yan added. “Max Holloway is also an incredible athlete and deserved the victory.”
Poirier’s career had its ups and downs, and Yan’s journey has been no different. After losing the bantamweight title to Aljamain Sterling via disqualification in March 2021, Yan faced a challenging period.
He lost three of his next four fights, including a rematch with Sterling and bouts against Sean O’Malley and current champion Merab Dvalishvili. Yet, Yan bounced back in 2024 with wins over Song Yadong and former champion Deiveson Figueiredo.
At 32, Yan can’t quite pinpoint what’s changed his momentum. But whatever it is, it’s working.
“I don’t know what’s different in the mindset,” Yan explained. “I’m still hungry and eager to win, aiming to become the next title challenger.”
“That’s my motivation now — to get this win and challenge for the belt again.”
