Gabriel Bonfim won a controversial split decision over Stephen Thompson at UFC Nashville, with fans and fighters questioning the judges’ verdict despite Bonfim’s grappling-heavy strategy.
Gabriel Bonfim managed to sway the judges, though not necessarily the fans, at UFC Nashville. His grappling-heavy strategy was just enough to secure a decision over Stephen Thompson in the co-main event at Bridgestone Arena. Well, according to two out of three judges, anyway. Mike Bell and Dave Tirelli scored it 29-28 for Bonfim, handing the Brazilian a split decision.
The crowd? Not so pleased. Boos echoed through the arena, but “Wonderboy” took it in stride. He invited Bonfim to join him atop the cage, a classy move to quell the discontent. Yet, fellow fighters weren’t shy about voicing their opinions on the controversial call.
Vince Morales didn’t hold back, tweeting it was a “trash decision.” He argued against rewarding “half failed takedowns” that do little damage. A sentiment echoed by many in the MMA community.
Belal Muhammad chimed in, saying he had Wonderboy winning. Meanwhile, Aljamain Sterling simply cheered, “Cmon WonderMan!!!” Kevin Holland, not a judge but with an opinion, had Thompson taking rounds two and three.
Derek Brunson added a touch of humor, marveling at Thompson’s age-defying performance. “No way he’s 42, maybe in dog years!” he quipped. Check out more reactions to Bonfim’s win below.
