Robert Whittaker Retirement Plans & Fairy Tale Ending

Robert Whittaker plans to fight four more times, aiming for a title shot and a fairy tale retirement, starting with his upcoming bout against Reinier de Ridder at UFC Abu Dhabi.

Robert Whittaker has a clear vision for the end of his illustrious career. Known as “The Reaper,” he’s gearing up to face Reinier de Ridder in the main event at UFC Abu Dhabi on July 26. This matchup is pivotal in the middleweight division, with Whittaker being a former UFC champion and de Ridder boasting a 3-0 record since joining in 2024.

Whittaker knows a victory over de Ridder won’t immediately grant him a title shot. Speaking to FOX Sports Australia, he shared his ideal retirement plan. “Four fights,” he stated. “I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want four more, that’s me. I see the stepping stones needed to do what I want to do.”

Despite recent setbacks, Whittaker has thwarted several rising contenders. Before losing to Khamzat Chimaev, he secured wins against Ikram Aliskerov and Paulo Costa. His recent 6-3 run includes victories over Marvin Vettori, Kelvin Gastelum, Jared Cannonier, and Darren Till.

Chimaev is set to challenge champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC 319 on August 16. Whittaker is eager for rematches with both fighters, though he acknowledges the crowded contender landscape. “The list is getting too long, now,” he chuckled. “I’m working. Reinier’s in the sights at the moment.”

In his bout with Chimaev, Whittaker suffered a severe injury when a choke displaced his teeth. The fight ended quickly, leaving Whittaker undeterred. “He was just better than me on the day,” he admitted. “I’ve got the L now, so all you can do is throw yourself back in the gym.”

Whittaker remains confident in his skills, particularly his striking. “Striking’s my game,” he emphasized. “He’s going to look to try and take me down and I’m not going to let him.” With determination and focus, Whittaker continues his journey toward a fairy tale ending.
