Netflix is moving forward with a biopic on Ronda Rousey’s life, directed by Augustine Frizzell, based on Rousey’s autobiographies, chronicling her journey from Olympic judo medalist to UFC star.
Netflix is moving forward with a film about Ronda Rousey’s life, and they’ve just attached a director. Exciting, right?
Augustine Frizzell, known for her work on the Emmy-winning series Euphoria, will direct the biopic. It’s based on Rousey’s autobiography My Fight/Your Fight and her latest book Our Fight. These works detail her journey from an Olympic bronze medalist in judo to a UFC superstar.
Deadline broke the news first. Rousey shared her excitement on social media, saying it’s "another step closer to making this dream a reality."
Frizzell’s no stranger to Netflix. She’s directing episodes of The Boroughs, a series produced by Stranger Things creators. Her pitch for Rousey’s biopic was reportedly a hit, and she’s a fan of Rousey, even practicing Muay Thai herself.
Originally, Paramount had the project, but it stalled. Rousey decided to write the screenplay herself, completing it in just seven days. Impressive, huh?
Paramount’s rights lapsed, allowing Netflix to take over. Now, the film will include more of Rousey’s story, like her first loss to Holly Holm and her move to WWE.
Rousey was a major UFC figure, defending her title multiple times and crossing into films like Entourage and Furious 7. With a director and screenplay in place, casting is the next step. Who’ll fill Rousey’s shoes? We’ll see!
