Seika Izawa Eyes GOAT Status, Warns Rising Stars

Seika Izawa, an undefeated Japanese MMA champion with a 17-0 record, aims for global recognition by defending her atomweight title against Rena Kubota while aspiring to overcome weight class challenges and become a dominant, inspirational figure in women’s MMA.

Seika Izawa stands as a titan in Japanese MMA, boasting an impressive 17-0 record with championships from DEEP and RIZIN. Her eyes are set on achieving global greatness, and she’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Izawa is gearing up for a showdown with Rena Kubota at the New Year’s Eve RIZIN event. While she’s aiming for another atomweight belt defense, she knows a win won’t instantly catapult her to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.

“I need to make my mark internationally,” Izawa shared through an interpreter. The challenge? Weight classes. The division lacks popularity, but she’s determined to change that narrative.

Izawa believes lighter weight classes offer more excitement in women’s MMA. She hopes her division gains international traction, showcasing what these fighters can truly do.

Starting her career as a strawweight, Izawa claimed the DEEP title before dropping to 108 pounds for RIZIN. With 11 consecutive victories, she’s hesitant about returning to a higher weight class.

“As of now, gaining weight is tough,” Izawa admitted. She plans to stay at atomweight unless circumstances force a change. It all hinges on finding fights and making a living.

Her dream bout? Seo Hee Ham, a strawweight fighter. The weight difference poses a challenge, but Izawa’s keen on the matchup.

Naming the greatest female MMA fighter is tricky, she says. Cris Cyborg is undeniably tough, but Izawa’s inspiration comes from Kanna Asakura. They share a history, having wrestled together.

Izawa defeated Asakura in 2024, but she doesn’t see it as a legacy-defining win. Facing veterans like Miyuu Yamamoto and Asakura marked a shift in the sport for her.

While beating veterans is crucial, Izawa aims to dominate rising stars too. She wants to be the formidable champion that future fighters strive to surpass.

Her goal? To remain an undefeated, dominant champion for the next 10 to 15 years, setting a high bar for newcomers.

Izawa was set to face Kubota earlier, but injuries delayed the match. Now, anticipation is at an all-time high for their upcoming clash.

As 2025 wraps up, Izawa doesn’t expect an even fight. She plans to showcase her grappling skills against Kubota’s striking prowess, aiming for a decisive victory.
