Sydney Sweeney Becomes Boxer in New Film Christy Premiering at TIFF

Sydney Sweeney stars as former boxing champion Christy Martin in the biopic “Christy,” set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, alongside another anticipated film, “The Smashing Machine,” featuring Dwayne Johnson.

Sydney Sweeney’s gearing up to throw hands in her new film, Christy, set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September.

On Monday, TIFF dropped a first look at Sweeney’s transformation into former boxing champ Christy Martin. The film, initially untitled, now has a debut at the festival running from Sept. 4-14, though the wide release date remains TBD.

Sweeney, known for roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You, underwent a dramatic transformation to portray Martin. The biopic delves into Martin’s life as a championship fighter and the tragedy she faced when her ex-husband attempted to murder her in 2010.

"My body was completely different," Sweeney shared with W magazine. "I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong."

Directed by David Michod, the film features Ben Foster as her husband, James Martin, with a cast including Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero.

Also debuting at TIFF is the much-anticipated biopic The Smashing Machine, about former UFC and PRIDE fighter Mark Kerr.

Directed by Benny Safdie, this film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the embattled MMA star, whose career was marked by talent and struggles, including a well-known battle with drug addiction.

Johnson is joined by Oscar nominee Emily Blunt, with fighters Ryan Bader and Oleksandr Usyk playing crucial roles. Exciting times for MMA fans!
