“The Smashing Machine” received a single Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Dwayne Johnson’s transformation into UFC Hall of Famer Mark Kerr, with recognition for prosthetic designer Kazu Hiro, but missed out on other anticipated nominations.
The Smashing Machine snagged a single Oscar nod ahead of the 2026 Academy Awards, set for Sunday, March 15, in Hollywood.
Nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the film showcases Dwayne Johnson’s jaw-dropping transformation into UFC Hall of Famer Mark Kerr. Hours of daily makeup turned Johnson into Kerr, a passion project he’s chased since first seeing the The Smashing Machine documentary.
"I’m truly honored and grateful for this nomination," said Kazu Hiro, the film’s prosthetic designer. "This project demanded trust, patience, and empathy from everyone involved."
Hiro added, "I share this recognition with our director Benny Safdie, the talented Dwayne Johnson, and the entire filmmaking team." A nod to the artistry and dedication of his makeup and prosthetics team followed, emphasizing the significance of the Academy’s acknowledgment.
Despite hopes for more nominations, Best Makeup and Hairstyling was the film’s sole Oscar nod. Johnson did snag a Best Actor nomination at the 2026 Golden Globes, but missed the Oscars cut. Emily Blunt, once an early favorite for her role as Kerr’s girlfriend-turned-wife, also didn’t make the Oscars list.
The Smashing Machine faces off against Frankenstein, Sinners, and The Ugly Stepsister in its category.
Catch the awards broadcast on March 15 at 7 p.m. ET, live on ABC.
