Three fighters, Miranda Maverick, Edmen Shahbazyan, and Alonzo Menifield, received indefinite medical suspensions following UFC Atlanta, with Maverick facing a potential year out due to a torn ACL.
Three fighters are now facing indefinite medical suspensions following UFC Atlanta this past Saturday night. The Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission confirmed these suspensions on Tuesday.
Miranda Maverick is one of the fighters sidelined indefinitely due to a torn ACL in her knee, suffered during her bout with Rose Namajunas. The injury occurred in the second round, and her knee buckled in the third, leading to a credited knockdown by Namajunas.
Maverick shared on Instagram, “I never got dropped, but I was unstable on my legs so as soon as I got hit in the third round my leg buckled.” She expressed gratitude for completing the fight and sharing the cage with the legendary Namajunas.
Typically, ACL injuries require surgery, meaning Maverick might be out for a year. Her indefinite suspension necessitates a doctor’s clearance before she can compete again.
Edmen Shahbazyan also received an indefinite suspension, or up to 180 days, unless cleared by a doctor. The commission didn’t specify his injury, but clearance is mandatory for his return.
Alonzo Menifield was the third fighter with a similar suspension after his victory over Oumar Sy. He, too, must obtain medical clearance before stepping back into the octagon.
Here’s the full list of medical suspensions from UFC Atlanta:
– Kamaru Usman: 7 days
– Joaquin Buckley: 21 days
– Rose Namajunas: 21 days
– Miranda Maverick: Indefinite or 180 days until cleared
– Edmen Shahbazyan: Indefinite or 180 days until cleared
– Andre Petroski: 14 days
– Raoni Barcelos: 30 days
– Cody Garbrandt: 30 days
And the list goes on, with varying suspension lengths for other fighters. Each must adhere to their respective recovery timelines before returning to action.
