Jon Jones briefly retired but reconsidered after learning of a potential UFC event at the White House, aiming for a fight against Alex Pereira, though matchmaking uncertainties and Dana White’s decisions may prevent it, while Pereira has other fight options including a potential matchup with Khamzat Chimaev, whom Jones praised highly.
Jon Jones recently pulled off one of the shortest retirements in MMA history. Just days after announcing his departure, he reversed his decision upon hearing about a historic UFC event planned at the White House in June.
The former champ quickly expressed interest in headlining the event. He had his sights set on a megafight with Alex Pereira, another two-division titleholder. Pereira was equally keen, often stating his desire to face Jones, though he’s since tempered expectations about fighting at the White House event.
Matchmaking for the event won’t begin until February. This delay has left Jones feeling doubtful about his chances to fight there, especially against Pereira.
“Pereira wants to fight me, but I don’t think Dana White’s going to allow that to happen,” Jones mentioned to Red Corner MMA. “It will be interesting to see what Dana wants.”
These off-cage dynamics might prevent Jones from competing at the White House. If that’s the case, he faces a tough decision about his fighting future.
If Jones is out, Pereira still has options. He could defend his light heavyweight title against someone like Carlos Ulberg or challenge himself at heavyweight against Tom Aspinall.
Another intriguing matchup for Pereira could be Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev has expressed interest in moving up to 205 pounds.
Jones is enthusiastic about this idea. He recently spent time with Chimaev and praised him highly.
“I think Khamzat Chimaev could win at any weight,” Jones said. “He’s one of the top fighters on the planet. Big enough for heavyweights, yet small enough to go down. A great welterweight.”
“I’d love to see him at light heavyweight,” Jones added. “He’d do great against guys like [Alex] Pereira and [Magomed] Ankalaev.”
