Vadim Nemkov, mentored by Fedor Emelianenko, is preparing for a significant heavyweight fight against Renan Ferreira at PFL Lyon, emphasizing his agility and well-rounded skills to overcome size disadvantages and aiming for a decisive finish.
Vadim Nemkov has long leaned on Fedor Emelianenko as a coach and mentor. Now, as he faces his biggest challenge yet at PFL Lyon, he’s turning to the legendary heavyweight once more.
On Saturday, Nemkov squares off against Renan Ferreira to vie for the PFL heavyweight title. Ferreira, standing a towering 6-foot-8 and weighing over 250 pounds, presents a daunting physical challenge. Yet, Nemkov knows from Emelianenko’s career that size isn’t everything.
“Fedor’s speed always set him apart,” Nemkov told MMA Fighting. “He was more agile and explosive. Being the right size, not too big, offers versatility. I can grapple, wrestle, box, strike.”
Size can limit abilities, Nemkov believes. Smaller heavyweights, like him, can excel in diverse areas.
Nemkov transitioned to heavyweight after struggling to cut to 205 pounds. Now, in his third PFL heavyweight fight, he’s healthier and happier.
“I feel much better,” Nemkov said. “No weight cut means I can eat and drink freely. I feel great.”
He stays in shape year-round, usually weighing around 250 pounds when not in camp. For fights, he trims down to 240 pounds.
Nemkov thrived as a light heavyweight, even defending his Bellator title, but he aims to achieve more at heavyweight. Beating Ferreira is just the beginning of what he hopes will be a successful run.
“Only time will tell,” Nemkov said. “But I want to surpass my light heavyweight achievements at heavyweight.”
Ferreira’s last fight was a loss to former UFC champion Francis Ngannou. While a Nemkov-Ngannou clash seems logical, the PFL chose Ferreira.
If victorious, Nemkov welcomes future challenges, including a potential bout with Ngannou. “Fighting Francis would be an honor,” he said. “I’d love to do it if the PFL wants.”
At PFL Lyon, Nemkov plans to showcase his well-rounded skills against Ferreira. Whether through a knockout or submission, he’s confident the fight won’t go the distance.
“I always look for a finish,” Nemkov said. “I’m training to sharpen my tools, whether it’s knockouts or submissions.”
He predicts the fight could end early, likely on the ground. “You’ll see more groundwork from me,” he added.
