Victor Hugo delivered a spectacular finish at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 10 in Las Vegas on Thursday night. He faced off against CJI champion Nicky Rodriguez, who was eager to avenge his previous losses to Hugo.
Rodriguez, entering with a strong 7-1 record under the FPI banner, couldn’t overcome Hugo’s prowess. Despite Rodriguez’s attempts, Hugo, a four-time IBJJF world champion, maintained control throughout regulation.
In overtime, Hugo strategically pulled guard, preventing Rodriguez from scoring takedown points. After being stood up by the referee, Hugo countered a takedown attempt, swiftly transitioning to a rear-naked choke for the win.
Post-victory, Hugo expressed interest in a rematch with Gordon Ryan. Their last encounter at ADCC 2022 ended with Ryan winning by points. “I think there’s only one guy that beat Nicky Rod on this stage,” Hugo remarked, hinting at his desire to face Ryan again.
Meanwhile, Oliver Taza sought redemption against Renato Canuto but fell short once more. Canuto secured victory with a last-minute score in overtime, maintaining his undefeated record under the FPI banner.
Renato Canuto announced an exciting new chapter after the match. He’s signed a four-fight deal with Tuff-N-Uff for an MMA debut later this year.
Elsewhere on the card, Brianna Ste-Marie executed a Von Flue choke on Elisabeth Clay. The move came after an intense struggle and demonstrated Ste-Marie’s technical prowess.
Former teammates Andy Murasaki and Daniel Sathler engaged in a fiery bout filled with slaps and kicks. However, Murasaki clinched victory in overtime with a swift heel hook submission.
The event also highlighted rising stars from veteran families. Cassia Moura edged out Sarah Galvao with a standing rear-naked choke in overtime. Meanwhile, Achilles Rocha battled Nathan Haddad to a draw but won via judges’ decision.
Opening the night were Alex Enriquez and Carlos Henrique, who showcased their skills with impressive submissions. Both finished their opponents decisively without needing judges’ input.
