A bantamweight matchup is in the works that can determine the future number, one contender, for the bantamweight championship. MMA Junkie’s Farah Hannoun reports that the UFC is looking to book a matchup between Petr Yan vs Marlon Moraes at UFC Fight Night Kazakhstan on June 13.
Yan is coming off a knockout win over Uriah Faber at UFC 245 on December 14, 2019. Yan is on an impressive nine-fight win streak beating the likes of Faber, Jimmie Rivera, and John Dodson. Yan was linked to a potential fight with Aljamain Sterling with them both going back and forth on social media, but it never came together. A win over Moraes can make Yan the number one contender for the bantamweight championship.
Moraes is looking to continue his momentum with a win over Yan. Moraes’s last win was a controversial split decision win over Jose Aldo. Some people thought that Aldo won the fight, including UFC President Dana White. Having lost a title fight against bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo, Moraes is looking to go on a winning streak to fight for the championship again. A win over Yan can put Moraes back in the conversation as a potential championship contender.
