Alex Pereira Anticipates Jiri Prochazka Rematch, Magomed Ankalaev to Wait

UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira expects to face Jiri Prochazka in a rematch after successfully defending his title against Jamahal Hill.

Alex Pereira’s got a rematch on his mind. He’s fresh from headlining the monumental UFC 300 in April.

He knocked out ex-champ Jamahal Hill in round one. It was his first successful defense of his 205-pound title. Now, he’s got his eyes set on the man he snatched the belt from.

Pereira spilled the beans to MMA Fighting. He was questioned about Jiri Prochazka and Magomed Ankalaev possibly squaring off to determine the division’s top contender.

“I’d be waiting forever for that fight,” Pereira quipped, looking forward to UFC 301. He’s itching to get back in the ring sooner. “From what we know, Jiri Prochazka’s probably next in line.”

Ankalaev? He’ll have to cool his heels. Hill’s been running his mouth, but he’ll also have to wait. Pereira’s pretty convinced Prochazka’s up next.

Prochazka also fought at UFC 300. He bagged a $300,000 bonus for his knockout of Aleksandar Rakic. It was a redemption fight after losing the UFC light heavyweight title to Pereira last November.

Ankalaev could be a contender after finishing Johnny Walker in January. But Pereira thinks timing is on Prochazka’s side for the next title shot.

“We’ve told them when we’re ready,” Pereira said. Nothing’s official yet, but he’s been told Prochazka’s likely due to timing. But Pereira’s game for anyone they throw at him.

It’s been less than half a year since Pereira and Prochazka’s showdown. Even with more time, Pereira doesn’t expect a completely revamped Prochazka in a potential rematch.

Pereira’s always adding to his skill set. He became a two-division UFC champ in just 11 pro fights. He doesn’t see Prochazka changing much if they meet again.

Prochazka has more experience, but Pereira thinks that could be a disadvantage. It might hinder him from making necessary changes from their last bout.

“I don’t see him showing up as a drastically different fighter,” Pereira said. He’s only had a few MMA fights compared to Prochazka’s 25. “You reach a point where you stop evolving because of the mileage you have in this game. I think I’ll evolve more from our last fight than he will.”
