Former partners Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez had to be separated at a press conference due to a heated exchange ahead of Alvarez’s fight against Jamie Manguia for the undisputed super middleweight title.
Once upon a time, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez were partners. Now, they can’t even share a press conference without a ruckus.
Alvarez is set to fight Jamie Manguia this Saturday. The venue? The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The prize? The undisputed super middleweight title.
At Wednesday’s press conference, things got heated. De La Hoya, who used to promote Alvarez, fired some verbal shots. Alvarez didn’t take it lying down. He shot back in Spanish. It got so intense that they had to be separated.

De La Hoya had something to say. “I would be remiss if I didn’t respond to the man I used to promote,” he said. He went on to say that Alvarez seems to have forgotten who made him a global star.
De La Hoya made it clear. He respects Alvarez as a fighter. But he’s not happy about the insults Alvarez has been throwing his way.
De La Hoya admitted to his past struggles. Rehab. Low points in life. Neglecting his mental health. But he was firm. Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez.
Alvarez was released from his contract with Golden Boy in November 2020. This was after he filed a breach of contract lawsuit earlier that year.
Later in the press conference, Alvarez had his say. He spoke to De La Hoya in Spanish. A translator tried to translate his words. But Alvarez cut him off. He translated his own words into English.
“He tried to steal money, and he’s a f*cking asshole,” Alvarez said. He didn’t mince words. He accused De La Hoya of stealing from his fighter.
