Islam Makhachev wants to create a lasting legacy, which is why he is pursuing a second UFC title and hopes to face new opponents rather than continuously rematching the same fighters in his current weight class.
Islam Makhachev is not solely focused on winning rematches to build his legacy. While he previously defeated Charles Oliveira and is set to face him again, Makhachev recognizes that repeatedly defeating the same opponents will not help him achieve his desired legacy. Instead, he has his sights set on a second UFC title.
Although he never turns down opponents, Makhachev understands that he needs new challenges in the lightweight division. He hopes to face different opponents or even have the opportunity to compete for a title in a different weight class. Expressing his desire for a second belt, he mentioned his interest in potentially moving up to welterweight in the future.
Following his upcoming fight with Alexander Volkanovski, Makhachev is willing to stay prepared for any opportunities that may arise. He mentioned his readiness to step in for the welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington. Makhachev’s ultimate goal is to secure a second championship in a different division, a feat accomplished by only a few fighters in UFC history.
While he refrained from predicting the winner of the Edwards vs. Covington fight, Makhachev expressed his preference to face Colby Covington with a title on the line. Covington has been outspoken about challenging Makhachev, should he move up to welterweight. However, Makhachev is fully aware that his focus should remain on his fight with Volkanovski for now.
Despite this rematch, Makhachev found motivation in the fact that many people were eagerly anticipating it. He is delighted with the opportunity to face Volkanovski again, especially on his terms in Abu Dhabi. Makhachev believes that this time, the fight will take place in his favor and is eager to prove himself once more.
