UFC Mexico City Weigh-ins: Edgar Chairez, Daniel Lacerda Miss Weight for Rematch

At the UFC Mexico City official weigh-ins, fighters Edgar Chairez and Daniel Lacerda missed weight, causing uncertainty about their upcoming match, while main event fighters Brandon Moreno, Brandon Royval, Yair Rodriguez, and Brian Ortega successfully made weight.

Well, folks, we’ve got a rematch on our hands! Brandon Moreno and Brandon Royval are gearing up for round two. Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega are also on the rematch train. But, hold on, Friday’s UFC Mexico City official weigh-ins were a hot mess, thanks to another pair of rivals.

Moreno (126) and Royval (126) made weight, as did Rodriguez (146) and Ortega (146). They’re all set for the main and co-main event. But further down the list, Edgar Chairez and Daniel Lacerda’s matchup hit another roadblock. Both fighters missed weight. Yeah, you read that right.

Lacerda was first up on the scale. He was a pound over the flyweight limit. But wait, there’s more. A few fighters later, Chairez showed up. He didn’t even come close to the 126-pound mark for a non-title bout. He weighed in at 131 pounds. Yikes!

We’re still in the dark about whether the matchup will proceed as a catchweight bout. And if it does, what penalty will both fighters have to cough up to the commission? It’s all up in the air.

The Chairez-Lacerda booking is turning into a beast of a story. Their first meeting last September ended in a no-contest. Referee Chris Tognoni stopped the bout as Lacerda was defending against a Chairez choke. They rescheduled for October, but Lacerda had to pull out due to a medical issue.

Throw in Chairez’s involvement in a referee blunder last year, and Lacerda’s track record of not making it past the 6:00 mark in his five UFC fights. You’ve got one of the weirdest pairings in MMA history.

As for the headliners, Royval and Ortega are out for revenge. They both lost to Moreno and Rodriguez in previous bouts due to shoulder injuries. Moreno finished Royval in a round at UFC 255, while Rodriguez took out Ortega in the first round at UFC Long Island.
