Chan Sung Jung to Have Surgery, Hopes to Return This Summer

UFC

UFC featherweight “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung will opt to get eye surgery due to experiencing double vision. Jung has been vocal about his eye injury since his last fight and the doctors in his home country South Korea has dismissed the seriousness of the injury. However, after getting a second opinion from doctors in Pheonix, Arizona Jung decided to have minor surgery on his eye.

Jung spoke with MMA Junkie about his upcoming eye surgery and how long it will keep him from fighting. “Finally, I decided to get the surgery done in Phoenix soon,” Jung said. “I am sure I will be able to get back to the cage around July or August because the surgeon says it is not a big surgery.”  Jung has been campaigning for a chance to fight featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski for the featherweight championship.

Jung is on a two-fight win streak and is ranked fourth in the featherweight division. His last win was against Frankie Edgar by TKO at UFC Fight Night 165 on December 21, 2019. UFC President Dana White has been outspoken and said the next opponent Volkanovski will be a rematch against former featherweight champion Max Halloway. Ranked fourth in the division and Volkanovski slated to fight Halloway, one opponent that fans have been interested in seeing Jung fight is a rematch against Yair Rodriguez.

Jung and Rodriguez had an epic first fight at UFC Fight Night 139 on November 10, 2018. Jung was winning the fight on track for a decision win until Rodriguez knocked out Jung with an elbow one second left of the fifth round. When speaking on a potential rematch with Rodriguez, Jung said “Let me make sure I am OK to fight him again. The fight was great, and that was one of the fights I never want to remove in my career.” However, Jung also doesn’t seem interested in fighting Rodriguez any time soon. Jung went on to say “I don’t think Yair wants to fight me because he already won the fight against me. I don’t see the reason I need to fight him, either, at this point in time.” For now, Jung will do minor surgery and will look to return in the summer to become a contender for the featherweight championship.
