Maurício Rua vs Antônio Rogério Nogueira Trilogy set for UFC 250

The UFC adds a legendary rivalry between two icons at UFC 250. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reports that a trilogy in the light heavyweight division between Maurício “Shogun” Rua and Antônio Rogério “Lil Nog” Nogueira will take place at UFC 250 in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 19. Both fighters are from Brazil and are legends in MMA. Their rivalry dates back from their time in the now-defunct Japanese MMA organization Pride Fighting Championship.

The trilogy started when both Shogun and Nogueira fought in the Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix at Pride FC: Critical Countdown on June 26, 2005. Shogun defeated Nogueira by unanimous decision and went on to win the tournament. They both found their way into the UFC and fought for the second time at UFC 190 on August 1, 2015. Shogun defeated Nogueira in the rematch again by unanimous decision. The trilogy will be 15 years in the making.

Nogueira is looking to get back on the win column after losing to Ryan Spann by knockout at UFC 237 on May 11, 2019. Before losing to Spann, Nogueira had a TKO win against Sam Alvey at UFC Fight Night 137 on September 22, 2018. He has won two out of his last six fights dating back from his loss against Anthony Johnson at UFC on Fox 12 on July 26, 2014.

Shogun is coming off of a split draw against Paul Craig at UFC Fight Night 164 on November 16, 2019. Before his fight against Craig, Shogun defeated light heavyweight up and comer Tyson Pedro by TKO at UFC Fight Night 142 on December 1, 2018. He is currently ranked 15th in the light heavyweight division.  In his last six fights, Shogun has won four and has only one loss dating back from his win against Nogueira at UFC 190.
